9m3 of Darkness.

The purpose of this project is to achieve a 9m3 dark space where light is absolutly avoided. After having analyzed the possible solutions, the choice is simple and functional. It is a circular space, whose entrance is shaped by the same characteristic.

It is a space whose area is 4'5216m2 and whose highest height is 2'20m, since the roof is a dome.

The perimeter wall is 2m high and consists of 20x40x80cm pieces of sandstone, as well as the dome itself. In this circumference a free enclosure space is left for access.

This is achieved by two circular revolving doors made up of a folded sheet of corten steel respectively.

Following the requirements and therefore, in order to prevent light from entering, a system of plates made of the same material bent in such a way, that at the limits of the doors themselves they cover 20cm creating a shadow effect when rotating the door.

The outer door opens to give way to the user, while the inner door remains locked until the user is in the access cylinder. It is at this time that the  outer door can be unlocked.

PROPOSAL

Regarding construction, old techniques and traditional materials such as lime mortar will be used. The cut steel plates that make up the access will be folded and welded according to the design.
So, with the data of the mass, the volume and the density of the materials we can calculate the required energy (MJ / kg)
and CO2 emissions (kgCO2 / kg).
